Indeed the universe works in mysterious ways. So I've been struggling with biochem for a while. I shouldn't say "struggle"....more like "trying to understand." I got through school with memorization (maybe 80% of the time). This tactic works for certain subjects, like anatomy. However, it doesn't apply for molecular cell biology. It was pure horror! Thus it was easy to memorize some concepts and show up for the oral exam. I feel sorry for the great professor who had to sit through my exam. Rumor had it that he was nominated for a Nobel. Anyhow, it was embarrassing to present my weak comprehension to such a distinguished individual. I'm sure he just wanted me to use logic...I pushed this experience under the rug. And promised to never become a cell biologist!
Well, I finally got over the fear. I spent extra time on the molecular bio chapter. Also found nice games and diagrams on the net. It made the process less painful. What the heck did I know at 18??! Yesterday, while doing research, I came across an NIH site for the human genome project. Turns out that today is National DNA Day. Okay it was an odd tidbit. Maybe the laborious effort paid off! The headline says: "1 day, 2 helices, 3 billion base pairs, 4 nucleotides, 5 years..." Pretty catchy tag line eh? How should we celebrate our double helices? Definitely be more gentle and kind, and healthy!

Hamburger meat
Over the weekend I had the opportunity to hang out (okay chaperone!) with a group of thirteen year old girls. I forgot about that awkward entry into adolescence. Perhaps for my own good. The hyperactive gals had an evening which consisted of bowling and pizza. Followed by a movie called "Accepted." Go to imdb for the details. I have to admit that it was silly fun. Lewis Black had a great role as the "wise old man." One of his lines was classic: "What is learning, it's paying attention. It's opening you up to the big ball of shit that we call life. And what's the worst thing that could happen is you get bit in the ass. Well let me tell you my ass looks like hamburger meat, but I can still sit down" Couldn't have said it better myself:-)

Hello.....
After a long absence in the blogosphere, the egg has returned. I'd rather forget the memories of the old blog. It had three or four entries. Mostly sarcastic stories about life in a town with a strange name, vast cornfields, lots of restaurants ("Is there anything to do in this town besides eat??") and little companionship. I was...lonely.
Little did I know that my loneliness was spurring negativity and hopelessness. Actually I knew, yet felt entitled to my pains and sorrows. I didn't think it was fair to move to the cornfields after a long stint in another part of the world....the nostalgia is still deep and confusing. Which gives forth the name for this blog...."spice the egg" was uttered in deep sleep--in a strange land. It must have been a sign of inner boredom. With myself? Or the surroundings?
The cornfield days are over. Thank goodness! There is such a thing as "cabin fever." Years of vague pains with intensity that I cannot even describe!! So, getting my life back...or getting spiced for life:-) Eehh now if I can master biochem....help me stay focused!
