Celebration

Indeed the universe works in mysterious ways. So I've been struggling with biochem for a while. I shouldn't say "struggle"....more like "trying to understand." I got through school with memorization (maybe 80% of the time). This tactic works for certain subjects, like anatomy. However, it doesn't apply for molecular cell biology. It was pure horror! Thus it was easy to memorize some concepts and show up for the oral exam. I feel sorry for the great professor who had to sit through my exam. Rumor had it that he was nominated for a Nobel. Anyhow, it was embarrassing to present my weak comprehension to such a distinguished individual. I'm sure he just wanted me to use logic...I pushed this experience under the rug. And promised to never become a cell biologist!

Well, I finally got over the fear. I spent extra time on the molecular bio chapter. Also found nice games and diagrams on the net. It made the process less painful. What the heck did I know at 18??! Yesterday, while doing research, I came across an NIH site for the human genome project. Turns out that today is National DNA Day. Okay it was an odd tidbit. Maybe the laborious effort paid off! The headline says: "1 day, 2 helices, 3 billion base pairs, 4 nucleotides, 5 years..." Pretty catchy tag line eh? How should we celebrate our double helices? Definitely be more gentle and kind, and healthy!

Happy DNA day!!
