Wedding With A Funny Lady

Last weekend I took an Alzheimer's resident to her granddaughter's wedding. About a year ago, her family had asked me if I could bring her, since they were going to be busy with the big day. She's touched my heart in many ways, so I was happy to say yes. I was allowed to bring a guest--I picked my former co-worker and current landlady (Angel Jr was busy!). The trip went well! I was afraid that she'd be hesitant to get in the car. Normally the daughters take her to appointments, holiday gatherings, etc. Alas, it was a success. Her family was delighted to see her and she made everyone laugh with her witty comments. At the reception, as soon as we sat down, she guzzled the glass of champagne. I guess she thought it was water?:) And then there was that jalapeno popper which she readily accepted from the waiter...She immediately spit it out and said "Here. You eat it"

We made sure that she was back by 9pm. At the end of the day, a person suffering from dementia might not remember your name, but he/she will remember the kindness of others. That's the secret to dealing with this disease. She tells her daughters "She's good to me" as I'm walking in the halls. I sort of cringe because I feel that's how everyone should be with her (and others like her)...
